PORT OF LOS ANGELES CARGO RISES 12% IN APRIL; UP 25% IN 2024

LOS ANGELES – May 20, 2024 – The Port of Los Angeles experienced a significant surge in activity in April, managing 770,337 container units, reflecting a 12% growth compared to the previous year. This marks the ninth consecutive month of year-over-year growth for the busiest port in the United States.

In the first four months of 2024, waterfront workers efficiently handled 3,150,841 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) across the marine terminals in Los Angeles, representing nearly a 25% increase over 2023. This figure is also 5% higher than the port’s five-year average since 2019, which includes two years of record volumes during the pandemic.

“All key operational metrics at the Port of Los Angeles have returned to or exceeded pre-COVID levels,” said Gene Seroka, Executive Director of the Port of Los Angeles, during today’s media briefing. “I encourage shippers to take advantage of our fluid terminals and available capacity. We are prepared to scale up operations as we move into the latter half of 2024.”

Seroka was accompanied at the media briefing by Daniel Hackett of Hackett Associates, which provides a rolling six-month forecast for imports at 16 major container ports across North America. Hackett offered insights into the increase in West Coast cargo volumes over the past year and the expectations for the traditional peak shipping season later this year.

In April 2024, the Port saw loaded imports of 416,929 TEUs, a 21% increase compared to the previous year. Loaded exports reached 133,046 TEUs, marking a 51% rise over the previous year. April marked the 11th consecutive month of year-over-year export growth.

The Port processed 220,262 empty containers, a 14% decrease compared to 2023.
