The CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin, an 18,000 TEU container ship, lost 44 containers overboard due to severe weather while navigating the Cape of Good Hope.

The French shipping company, CMA CGM, reported that the Benjamin Franklin encountered “unexpectedly strong adverse weather conditions” off the coast of South Africa during a westbound voyage from Asia to Europe. In addition to the 44 containers lost, another 30 containers were damaged in the storm.

CMA CGM confirmed that there were no injuries to the crew, and the vessel remained seaworthy. The company also stated that no pollution was reported, and an inspection revealed that the contents of the containers were “harmless” and did not include hazardous materials.

“CMA CGM immediately notified the relevant authorities and will proceed to Cape Town for a thorough assessment of the situation. We will take all necessary measures to ensure the safe continuation of the sea voyage,” the company announced.

Typically, container ships transit the Red Sea and Suez Canal when traveling between Asia and Europe. However, most vessels have diverted their route via the Cape of Good Hope to avoid the threat of attacks by the Houthi in Yemen in the Red Sea. This change in route has exposed ships, not usually navigating this area, to severe winter storms in the region.
